The wonderfully named The Cellophane Flowers give us a fantastic album of swirling guitar sounds. After searching through many releases of random souless squelches and bumps, its nice to come across a fully formed expansive gem like this

francisco pinto - warm milk - [pueblo nuevo]

There seems to be a lot of good netlabel stuff coming from Chile at the moment. Recommended is francisco pinto’s album, bathed in slow moving pads and sounds made with proper old school keyboards. This results in a lovely warm album of electronica, that somehow reminds me off stereolab at their best.

Back from the summer with some great tunes and some shoddy mixing!! Including the some classical piano from nest, nasty bass from Columbia courtesy of MALA, the sadly maligned genre of 80’s buisiness music and a great piece of Mexican music from 1926

After listening to a mass of electronic music, you sometimes forget how innovative and outstanding music made from conventional instruments can be. This is an exceptional release of minimalist piano and strings from nest and one of the best releases I’ve heard for a while.

bad loop - luo - [One label ]

Okay okay…..this came out in 2005, but this still sounds great and deserves a download. it’s one of the best in the one label catalogue from Finnish group “bad loop”. Rock solid electro, slowly morphing pieces, great for a long walk on the Mp3 player

Compiling the tracklisting, I realised this mix contained a truly worldwide selection of artists. 3 russians, 1 chilian, 3 americans, 1 belgian, 1 french, 1 english - one great mix

This mix includes a cracking track from Nogaro, a few electro tracks which sound a bit 80’s (without the bad synths), some soulful hip-hop and several songs with bells!!

relative q - small craft exercise caution - [One label]

I don’t know how bad winters are in Pittsburgh, but obviously relative q is not a keen fan of them (see trackname in podcast). However, it looks like he’s been spending his time well producing some great noisy guitars and electronics pieces which hark back to the shoegazing scene of the 90’s

Nol’ - Orange - [Share my wings]

This is an excellent release from Nol’ who comes from the Ural region of Russia. The album is presented as one 20minute track with ideas flowing in and out. Quite chilled electronica but with lots of room for experimentation, particularly the way different sounds have been layered to make something completely different.

This mix was going to be all depressing glitch electronics, but then the sun came out so it became a bit more uplifting……

I love the dirty bassline from [creeper:robusto], some good jump around brilliance from Imagine I had Hands, the folk plucking of Letna somehow works next to the minimalism of Martin Donath and make sure you check the oddball but catchy track by The Rabbits (dedicated to all squirrels??)

As well as having a fantastic cover and the best name for a track of recent times (you can’t beat Unification Theory Explained Through Braile). This is a very strong album of guitar experimentation. Particularly like the folkish “Milk Stamen” and the sonic youthish fuzz of “missing tide”.

Imagine I Had Hands - Work EP - [It’s a trap]

Any indie label with an ounce of marketing skill should consider releasing some of their albums for free, as a way to introduce people to their bands. I’ll be keeping an eye out for the next releases of Imagine I Had Hands after hearing this album. Quality straight up head nodding rock and roll music.

If this mix had a title it would be “3am:music for cycling through empty cities”. The musical accompaniment to some recent hazy nightime cycle rides was (of course) some great beat led netlabel music. Starting with the best of recent house releases before straying off into more abstract messed up beats and finally just drones and clicks….

This is an album of twelve mixes and reworks by Milieu. Each track comes from a different artist but seen through the kaleidoscope of milieu each is a warped click-hop gem. Particularly like the reworking of Black Moth Super Rainbow’s Lake feet with it acoustic folky vibe.

An all corners mix. Starting off with some off-beats. Then playing some awesome tunes made on obsolete electronics, and after that some lofi mumblings from depressed guys. And of course the usual miscellaneous stuff……

Its good to be able to play so many songs from the 8bitpeople label, I find that their releases are getting better and better. Its more than being able to make music which sounds like a computer game, the music stands in its own right as being great. This album is great example, not too dark or too “techno”. With it being so simple be able to pick up a software package and produce a half decent dance track, the thing that stands the innovators out from the crowd is in the details. You can certainly hear in this album with its diced vocals and the complex beats

Wow, i’ve run into a bunch of great tracks with actual singing on them!! Add to this some mellow organics, crying guitars and other freaky bits from the dark corners of free music land, and you have a great mix

This compilation is the first release on the tripostal label. It’s going to be difficult one to follow because its an excellent folkie/indie/electronicie release with plenty of stand out tracks (I could have played 5 or 6 from this release in the podcast). Elvy’s “An end will come” is a awsome countryish track and of a quality that few can better - commercial or netlabel, whilst Bambi Kramer “Saddest Meltdown” is a great downbeat song for a bad day

Evan Valentine with a bunch of collaborators has released this lush album of electronica. Every track is well worked, without it becoming too angular and dark. It kindof reminds me of some of fourtet’s best work

Perfect late night mix. Listening back, it reminds me of the days when I use to listen to late night radio, flicking between commercial FM stations and DJ’s with a licence to experiment (where did they go?). Hence some tracks that I’ve christened softrock-electronica, some fine 4-4 house and plenty of other oddments…

This one comes from the glitch-minimalism-house folder on the MP3 player. It has a classic house sound, but manages to maintain enough of the glitches and clicks to stand it apart from the generic. The brilliant opener, Sine walker is the stand out track and one that any DJ should put in their record bag (or laptop bag)

Beatumn - Blanket [top33]

Wisely I haven’t played this in the podcast as it’s one track - 52 minutes long, and playing anything less than 15 mins wouldn’t do it justice. Yes we’re talking ambient sounds here and well worth the download. With its slowburning organic drones it gives a nod to the great ambient productions of the past, but with Eno disappearing into production hell and Stars of the Lid in their lair polising up a new gem, there’s room for plenty more of this quality.
