top cc releases 06
-------------------------
I started downloading netlabel music in May and June, and I've heard
some great stuff since then. I thought I'd take an opportunity to share
some of my best discoveries with you.....
------
10 great 06 cc releases (in no particular order)
------
<r> Bad Matter - soul on fire - pp013md
<o> Ahhh drum and bass. It a shame rougher dance sounds aren't so
common on Netlabels as electronica. This release shows the way with a
couple of great dub-tinged drum and bass tunes. Get in your car, turn
the bass up to 11 and drive around, pissing off your neighbours

<r>Coeval - Distante - mn005
<o>Hailing from Madrid, Coeval have released a fantastic album
here. We're right on the innovative edge, with slow burning frequencies
that are a recording of an improvisation from the Sonar electronic
festival, Spain. This is what releasing your music on netlabels is
about. No need to pander to the record label, just innovate, release on
the net and find you audience

<r>Crepusculum - Sky Diaries EP - 12rec.036
<o>A nice album of chilled folky guitars, think Kings of Convenience or Nick Drake, lots of potential
<l>http://www.archive.org/details/12rec.036
<r>Kultobjekt - Home is... - Catorce#014
<o>If there's one thing that netlabels excel in, it's releasing
quality minimalist electonica. This is the best example, perhaps a bit
too minimalist for the dancefloor, but a great one to study to

<r>Lezrod - Data Transfer - zym007
<o>Its not just europeans and americans releasing great albums
under cc, I have downloaded a number of quality south american
releases. Lezrod comes from Columbia and on this remix albums his sound
is reminicant of the infuencial Mexican electronic artist murcof. The
first track Jas is mindblowing

<r>Loscil - Stases - one023
<o>The only band who I'd heard of before downloading their
release. Loscil have releases albums on the legendary Kranky records
previously. They make electronica but this album goes further towards
the difting drones that is the stable of the texan label. This is the
best thing they released. Hopefully after listening to this you'll go
and buy their other albums

<r>SpaceTourist - Last Year Summer - diginet006
<o>An fantastic release. This album has got heart and suceeds in
every way. Great electronica that works well as an album and with
quality production. You might say it's too good to be free.

<r>Pasquale - H.O.U.S.E EP - tek07
<o>"Enjoy the return of house music", This is my most listened to
cc release. Straight down the line old school house, from the days when
some extasy and house music made for a good Friday night (...well not
for me, I was about 9). The first track on this album reminds me of the
baggy classic "weekender" by flowered up.

<r>Transient - over the river and through the woods - one016
<o>Another great release on the one label. I think quite a melancholic album. Very nice beats
<l>http://one.dot9.ca/2/releases.php?id=020
<r>Wavespan - Wavespan - mtk.mp3.161
<o>Wavespan debut netlabel release is a rich album of mostly
ambient work. It harks back to the sounds Pink Floyd and Tangerine
Dream (without the 38minute meanderings!!)

------
<t>Cold Sweat - Sensual Physics
<o>What a tune!! You don't need to reprogram your synth to make a
great tune. I'm sure I recognise some sounds from my
first £30 casio keyboard in the late 80's, but this is not
kitch, just blinding beats

<t>Books of Mozeez - Walcker Crew
<o>Chenard Walcker is French and he runs a free sampling website.
According to the blurb he "believes that recontextualization of
previously 'finished' works can be done ethically and can in itself
constitute authorship", but before you start stroking your goatee, take
a listen. If that is him singing, then I think you'll agree that
Chenard may also be insane, with vocals that seem to be skirting the
fine line between David Byrne and the Crazy Frog
<l>http://www.archive.org/details/fsz046
<t>Wired - Reii
<o>With Aphex Twin and Boards of Canada making electronic music
using cut up voices, reii is looking up to the greats. With this track
he nearly beats them at it.
<l>http://www.bumpfoot.net/foot026.html
<t>Hypnose - Level 77
<o>Here Level 77 provide you with some straight 4/4 deep house action and its fantastic
<l>http://www.archive.org/details/ZIMMER021
<t>Truth Wounds - Bject
<o>Maybe I've been listening to much obscure music, but to me
this is a wonderous pop song. A song for holding someones hand to.
<l>http://www.notype.com/nishi/releases/96/index.html
<t>Spring Droids [alessandro crimi remix] - Cheslo
<o>Every significant moment of your life has a soundtrack - "I
ran away from her and then it was too late. I couldn't do anything but
think about her and grow more obsessed"
<l>http://www.broque.de/releases/026pasture/026pasturee.htm
<t>Handbook - The Plum and the Messenger
<o>A palatial drone which sounds like a church organ being put through effects pedals
<l>http://www.luchalibrerecordings.com/releases/LLR022/LLR022.html
<t>Engine Falling - Fake Blizzard
<o>Emotional glaswegian guitarring in the footsteps of Mogwai and the Delgardos
<l>http://www.legoego.de/l_index.php?locator=releases&release_id=13
<t>24:17 - Pacta Sunt Servanda
<o>I had this on my mp3 player for ages and then never listened
to it, probably because of its 24minute length. I finally put it on
during a soul destroying 5 hour bus journey and it suddenly made
complete sense. A beautiful piece of sonic art
<l>http://www.archive.org/details/pssrecords002
<t>Uncalibrated - You
<o>Yes you can record you guitars and vocals using a computer
too, and it can sound great. Record company execs get you chaque books
ready
<l>
Some decent stuff if I do say so. Apologies for it being mostly
instrumental and electronics bases.... In 07 I hope to hear more vocals
and increasing numbers great guitar/classical/punk/urban/hiphop/blues
releases
Big up all the supporters of netlabels and cc for their releases.
Particular respect to the internet archive (and the embedded flash player!!),
the marvin suicide show (on Resonance FM), the netlabel-board, Net
Klang mix and the netwaves radio show
